​What Irlen Screening Identifies:

 

The Irlen Screener certification provides comprehensive assessment tools to identify:

  • the specific light sensitivities causing struggles: slow reading rate, poor comprehension, skipping lines, re-reading

  • the visual distortions including movement, blurring, and pattern glare affecting vision and mood

  • depth perception problems affecting sports performance and spatial tasks

  • environmental sensitivities to fluorescent lighting, computers, and bright spaces

  • physical symptoms: headaches, eye strain, fatigue, nausea when reading

Certified Irlen Screeners can provide

  • immediate intervention through Irlen overlays leading to dramatic improvements in client reading performance and quality of life outcomes.

  •  comprehensive recommendations for classroom and workplace accommodations.

  • referral to a diagnostician if more than reading is a concern.

Who qualifies for Irlen Screener Training?

The minimum of a bachelor's degree is required. Screeners are likely to be professionals working with reading/learning challenges:

  • Educators: Teachers, reading specialists, special education professionals, school psychologists,

  • Healthcare: Occupational therapists, optometrists, speech pathologists, psychologists, counsellors - careers, life coaches etc.

  • Support Professionals: Educational consultants, disability coordinators, vision therapists

Certified Irlen Screeners receive

  • Certification from the Irlen® Institute to carry out assessments.  

  • Work with individuals  and groups

  • Ability to join the Australian Association  - AAIC.

  • Ability to become an Irlen Diagnostician

Irlen Diagnosticians carry out comprehensive Assessment & Testing:

  • initial screening sessions

  • advanced assessment to determine whether Irlen Spectral Filters will make a difference

  • ​determine individualized color requirements for Irlen Spectral Filters - the precision-tinted glasses and contact lenses that address specific light sensitivity wavelengths.

  • conduct yearly rechecks.

  • assess improvement for reading and academic activities as needed.

Who Qualifies to become an Irlen Diagnostician?

​

Advanced Professional Requirements:

Minimum qualifications include a teaching certificate or graduate degree in education, psychology, counselling, assessment, speech, occupational therapy or rehabilitation, health and medical field, or experience working with literacy programs.

​

Progressive Training Path

Prospective diagnosticians must work as certified Irlen Screeners, complete numerous screenings, and undertake training under mentorship of a regional director prior to being accepted for diagnostician training.

Professional Network:

Certified diagnosticians provide the highest level of Irlen Syndrome assessment and treatment through precision-tinted lens prescriptions.

Diagnosticians are provided with very intensive training, minimum of 5 days and are trained from the pool of screeners who are interested in and have demonstrated personal and professional suitability.
